06 HPV Vaccine Information
The HPV vaccine can protect against strains you have not yet been exposed to, even after a diagnosis. Talk to your doctor.
About the HPV Vaccine (Gardasil 9)
Gardasil 9 protects against 9 strains of HPV including the two highest-risk strains (16 and 18) responsible for most cervical cancers, and the two strains (6 and 11) that cause most genital warts. Even if you already have HPV, the vaccine may protect you against strains you do not yet have. The CDC recommends vaccination through age 26 and for some adults ages 27-45 based on individual circumstances.
Can I Get Vaccinated After Diagnosis?
Yes. Having HPV does not mean the vaccine will not benefit you. You may have one strain and the vaccine can still protect you against others. Discuss with your doctor whether vaccination makes sense for your situation. It is not a treatment for existing HPV but it is protection against future strains.
Questions to Ask Your Doctor
Am I a candidate for the HPV vaccine at my age? | Would vaccination help protect me against other strains? | How often do I need Pap smears given my history? | What does my abnormal result actually mean for my long-term health? | What lifestyle changes support HPV clearance?

07 What's Normal?
So much fear comes from not knowing what to expect. Here is what the data actually says about HPV.
✓
HPV is extremely common. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection. At least 80% of sexually active people will get HPV at some point in their lives. You are not unusual.
✓
Most HPV clears on its own. In most people with healthy immune systems, HPV clears naturally within 1-2 years without any treatment.
✓
Abnormal Pap results are not cancer. ASCUS, LSIL, and even HSIL are pre-cancerous changes that are monitored and treated. Most do not progress to cancer.
✓
You can have HPV with no symptoms. Most people with HPV never develop warts or abnormal cells. That is why regular screenings are so important.
✓
Your immune system can clear HPV. Supporting your immune health through sleep, nutrition, stress reduction, and supplements can help your body clear the virus.
✓
Warts are treatable. Genital warts caused by low-risk HPV are treatable and do not cause cancer. There are multiple effective treatment options.
✓
You can still have fulfilling relationships. Millions of people with HPV have healthy, happy relationships and sexual lives. Disclosure is a personal decision and support exists for navigating those conversations.
✓
Regular screening is your superpower. The main reason cervical cancer is so preventable is because of regular Pap smears. Staying on schedule is the single most important thing you can do.
"You are not broken. You are human and you are learning to protect yourself beautifully."
08 You Are Not Your Diagnosis
You Are Not Your Diagnosis
Your diagnosis is something you carry. It is not who you are.
You are still worthy of love, connection, joy, and a full life. Nothing about this changes your value. Nothing about this makes you less deserving of the life you imagined for yourself.
It is okay if you are still processing. It is okay if some days feel heavy. Healing is not linear and you are allowed to take this one step at a time.
You are not alone in this. There is a community of people who understand, who have felt what you feel, and who are learning how to move forward. Just like you.
Give yourself grace. Give yourself time. And most importantly, do not give up on yourself.
"You are worthy of every good thing that is coming to you."
What do you want to say to yourself right now?
PositivePathways was built for moments like this. So you never have to carry this alone.
09 Daily Affirmations

01
"I am worthy of love, connection, and joy."
02
"My diagnosis does not define my worth or my story."
03
